This afternoon, the historic soccer rivalry between Manchester United and Manchester City will be tested in the Manchester Derby. The two teams have met 162 times since they first squared off as in 1881. Here’s sports columnist John Walters on the epic matchup:

To put it in terms we yanks might understand, Manchester United is to Manchester City what the New York Yankees are to the New York Mets. Manchester United, a.k.a. the Red Devils, is the most valuable sports franchise on Earth ($2.24 billion, according to Forbes) and has won more English football titles — 19 — than any club in league history. Its manager, Ferguson, is a knight, for Lord’s sake.
Then there is Manchester City, or “City.” The Blues last won a championship, only their second, in 1968. Forbes has them ranked 13th in terms of most-valued soccer teams, at $443 million. City’s fans are renowned for serenading the club with “Blue Moon,” a song written by an American duo (Rogers and Hart) that is not particularly jubilant.
